Thursday, October 2, 2014 – Vigo-Madrid-Atlanta-Kansas City

The desk clerk of Hotel Avión told us to check the hotel cafetería (coffee shop) while we were waiting for him to get his car ready to take us to the airport. We ordered 2 orange juice natural (3€ each) and they came with a coffee cake.

6:37 AM – Vigo: Hotel Avión – machine in cafetería for making orange juice (natural) behind the bar.

At the airport check-in, the lady at the Iberian counter told us our flight was delayed and sent us to another counter to check on other flight possibilities. The lady at the second counter finally understood that our flight was not Iberian and sent us to the AirEuropa check-in counter, where we got boarding passes starting with the 8:55 am flight AEA 7311.

9:02 AM – Vigo: AEA flight 7311 at takeoff from Vigo. View across city to coast and Cíes islands on horizon.

‏‎9:02 AM – Vigo: AEA flight 7311 at takeoff from Vigo. View across city to coast and clearer view of Cíes islands (you can make out the white beach of Praia das Rodas just left of the wingtip).

On the AEA flight to Madrid, nothing to eat or drink was complementary (only agua del grifo [tap water]). So we got one müsli bar (1.50€) and one bag of mixed nits and dried fruit (2.99€).

When we arrived in Madrid around 10 am, we had a short time before our connecting flight and had to get to another terminal (A). We got off the plane onto a bus to the terminals and got off at a stop where we could see a sign for terminals A and B, but we should have stayed on the bus. We found that it was a long walk from there to our gate, and another bus did not come. So a security man told us we could go upstairs and walk to terminal A in 10 minutes if we hurried. As we walked, signs said it was 25 min to Terminal A; so we speed-walked and ran. However, we had to go through passport control, which further delayed us. After passport control, we got to the Delta part of Terminal A; a young lady from Delta dressed like a counter person ran to meet us (along the way, one security man said he would call ahead and tell them we were coming), and she ran with us to gate A2, where we were rushed aboard, just before the 11:05 am takeoff. The flight attendant had to ask a man to move out of one of our seats, since he had thought we were no shows.

The on-screen flight tracker showed that our flight would cross the Atlantic coast about halfway between Vigo and Porto, Portugal.
